Wedding Attire Ideas: What to Wear to an Evening Wedding

| February 16, 2011 | 4 Comments

Evening wedding anyone?

Just like the little white dress worn by a bride for her nuptials, there is a distinct dress code for an evening wedding. If you are a guest of the bride and groom, you don’t want to commit a fashion faux pas and wear the wrong wedding attire.

Because this type of event may be more casual than a black-tie party or as formal as a debutante ball, you’ll need wedding attire ideas to look your best without upstaging the bride.  When picking your wedding attire, consider the time of evening, the season and where the event is held.

Here’s how to look appropriate and gorgeous for your next evening wedding:

Wedding Attire Ideas: Color

Obviously, the color white or cream is out of the question, unless you are the bride. But any other color found in the rainbow is perfect for an evening wedding.

When in doubt, a little black cocktail dress is perfect for casual evening weddings, or for a more formal fall wedding, a solid-colored red, black or navy blue ball gown flatters most style personalities and body types.

Wedding Attire Ideas: Wedding Shoes and Accessories

If you are wearing a simple wedding dress, add a dose of  shine to your evening ensemble with a tiara made of hundreds of Swarovski crystals.  For the wedding guest or bride who prefers classic pearls to silver or gold pieces, adorn your neck with a simple long strand of  cream or white pearls.

If you are a wedding guest with great style, tangle and twist short and long strands of gold, pearl or crystal chains around your neck and arms three or four times to add a sophisticated and classic look to your wedding attire.

Don’t underestimate the power of high heels worn with your wedding attire. Slip on your stilettos or strappy sandals and you will automatically look infinitely sexier and more dressed up.

Final Wedding Attire Tips for the Bride and her Guests:

  • If you are a wedding guest don’t buy a dress too far ahead of time. You don’t want to look out of fashion by the time the bride walks down the aisle.
  • Think about your comfort. There’s nothing worse than wearing too tight clothing and shoes to a wedding that lasts all night long.
  • Give yourself a mini dress rehearsal. Try on your complete wedding outfit: shoes, pantsuit or dress, handbag, hairstyle and jewelry two weeks before the wedding. While there is still time to fix any part of your wedding attire that is not absolutely perfect.

I’d probably go with a colored in theme with the rest of the wedding. It must be classy and simple looking though not too simple. Found some really interesting Alfred Angelo bridesmaid dresses that are worth checking out. Anyway, good tips and thanks.

Looked for what’s new and found that the new black is Navy Blue. Found a stunning a-line at Dress Barn. Great price now what shoes to wear??? Husband to wear his navy blue jacket, should work well.

Hi Renee! Thanks for your question. Here are a few shoe color choices to wear with your navy blue dress.

Unleash your outer sparkle with a pair of silver, bronze or pewter footwear that will dress up your blue wedding attire with a unexpected touch of shine and glimmer. Wedding shoes — whether they are an ankle-strapped stiletto or pumps– will add an unexpected pop of color to your dark wedding attire.

Have an awesome time at the wedding!
