If you want to preserve your wedding flowers and bridal bouquets you need more than a clean vase filled with warm water. Because flowers are a living element uprooted from the soil and transported to your neighborhood florist, you’ll need a few tips to give your wedding bouquet a long lush life.
From using silica gel as a preservation agent, to keeping them in the fridge to cool before drying, here’s how to preserve your wedding flowers or wedding bouquet and keep a precious wedding keepsake for years to come.
Things You’ll Need:
- twine
- silical gel
- wedding flower preservation kits
- dried flower preservation kits
Step 1 -Put your wedding bouquet in the fridge. Stick the flowers in the refrigerator to lower the temperature.
Step- 2 - Cut the ends of the flowers twice. Once you unwrap the flowers from the floral covering, immerse the stems underwater and cut them at an angle. It’s best to trim the stems on an angle every two to three days in lukewarm water. The stems are cut at an angle to allow the water to allow maximum hydration for the blooms.
Step 3- Allow your flowers to air dry to preserve your wedding bouquet. Remove all of the stems from the wedding bouquet to preserve the design aesthetic of the original bouquet. Wrap the wedding bouquet with twine to keep the shape of the wedding bouquet.
Step 4 – Immerse your flowers in 4 pounds of silica gel per each 12 flowers you want to preserve. Cover each flower completely with the substance to draw out moisture without damaging the petals.
Step 5- Place your wedding bouquet in an air-tight container and cover with the gel for 2 weeks. The gel will preserve your wedding bouquet beautifully.
Additional Tips to Preserving a Wedding Bouquet Yourself:
- Ask your florist which preservation works best with your chosen wedding flowers. Some flowers cannot be freeze-dried successfully.
- Keep your floral bouquets in a cooler until they are ready to be preserved or transported to your home. Put a large bag of ice in the cooler. Cover the ice with plastic; and set the wedding bouquet on top. Do not submerge the flowers into the ice. For flowers arranged in floral foam, keep the foam saturated with water.
- Unfortunately, no method of flower preservation can keep the fresh and colorful look of your wedding bouquet. Pressing and freeze-drying will alter the colors the least of all the floral preservation methods.
